Choose a starting party that works together
Build a team around reliable contribution, movement and compatible positioning. Familiarity matters more than assigning every hero a traditional RPG role.

Which roles does a party need?
Look for a way to remove dangerous enemies, a way to handle objectives and a way to survive rounds where removal is impossible. These jobs can overlap within one hero. A healer is not a substitute for preventing damage, and a durable hero cannot guarantee that every enemy will attack them. Think about where each character wants to stand, how long their engine needs to develop and whether they depend on the same element.
How do you check compatibility?
Sketch the first two rounds for each candidate pair. Ask whether both heroes can reach useful positions without occupying the same narrow passage. A formation user needs dependable allied positioning; a summoner needs routes through the front line; an element user needs supply. Choose at least one hero whose normal turn remains useful when the other is setting up. At higher player counts, discuss doorway traffic before adding another melee or summon-heavy plan.
What causes a seemingly strong team to struggle?
Several individually powerful classes can all want a setup round, the same element or the same attack hex. Their theoretical damage then arrives too late. Diagnose the repeated conflict rather than assuming the classes are weak. Change a few card choices, agree who enters a room first and keep one flexible responder. Test the revised routine on an ordinary encounter before making major campaign commitments or purchasing equipment intended for a complicated combination.
Which references should you keep nearby?
Use the class library to understand your party, consult card economy when planning endurance, and open the world map between expeditions.
